Xizang Snapshots: How apples are growing a sweet future in Xizang
At the foot of the snow-peaked mountains in Nyingchi, southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, nearly 50 hectares of apple orchards are in full bloom. By October, the trees will be loaded with bright red and golden "Xiangfu" and "Nangga" apples. They will be sold across China and exported to Nepal.
Just a few years ago, local apple farmers were struggling with low yields and limited markets. Today, modern orchards and "company + cooperative + farmers" partnerships are bringing better technology and steadier incomes to local families.
The highland environment gives these apples something special: Long hours of sunshine and pure snowmelt irrigation make them naturally sweeter, crisper and cleaner with a refreshing juiciness in every bite.
Now, these tiny apples are helping to grow a new path to prosperity for those living on the Plateau.
