China has completed its first security assessment for the overseas transfer of remote sensing satellite data in south China's Hainan Province, marking a breakthrough in the cross-border flow of such data.

According to the Cyberspace Administration of Hainan Province, the assessment was recently completed, becoming the first case of its kind nationwide.

Remote sensing satellite data is regarded as both a key data resource for the digital economy and a strategic asset linked to national security. For years, factors including overlapping regulations, difficulty in determining data sensitivity and the lack of previous application cases have made compliant cross-border data transfers a major challenge for the industry.

Officials said the successful assessment fills a gap in China's compliance framework for the overseas transfer of commercial remote sensing data. It also provides a replicable reference for companies seeking to conduct lawful cross-border data flows and is expected to support the digitalization and international expansion of China's commercial space industry.
