Golden Dragon Parade lights up Beijing’s Liangma River

A spectacular display of intangible cultural heritage took over Beijing’s glittering Liangma River on the evening of May 18, as the Golden Dragon Parade – a folk tradition from Yangshuo, Guangxi Region – made its debut in the capital.

The event was part of the first China New Cultural Creative Market & Trendy Play Carnival. Set against the backdrop of Chaoyang Park’s north lake, a giant “golden dragon” formed by a chain of bamboo rafts slowly sailed across the water. Illuminated by city lights and accompanied by rhythmic drumbeats, the dragon – with its head held high and tail swaying – wound its way through the lake’s shimmering surface.

The parade weaved under bridges and into reflections of the nightscape, drawing a lively crowd of residents and tourists. The scene merged ancient folk artistry with the modern waterfront aesthetics of one of Beijing’s trendiest leisure spots.

The accompanying fair featured a rich selection of handmade crafts, traditional artisan goods, and China-chic cultural products – blending vintage elegance with youthful trends. The onshore market bustled with visitors, while the golden dragon glided on the river, creating a striking contrast between land-based heritage and water-borne spectacle.

The dragon parade will be staged again on May 19 and 20 as part of the fair’s ongoing program.
