Aston Villa ended a 30-year wait for major silverware after defeating Freiburg 3-0 in the UEFA Europa League final in Istanbul on Wednesday night.
Managed by Europa League specialist Unai Emery, Villa produced a composed and clinical display at Besiktas Park to secure the club's first trophy since the 1996 English League Cup and its first continental title since winning the European Cup in 1982.
The victory marked another milestone in Villa's remarkable resurgence under Emery, who previously guided the club to the latter stages of both the UEFA Conference League and UEFA Champions League before finally delivering silverware this season.
Among the spectators was Prince William, the Prince of Wales, a lifelong Villa supporter, who witnessed the club lift silverware in its first European final appearance since his birth.
Villa showed attacking intent from the opening minutes. Morgan Rogers nearly struck after only two minutes with a powerful effort that forced Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu into an early save.
Freiburg, playing in their first European final since their formation, threatened occasionally through set pieces, an area in which they have excelled throughout the season. Nicolas Hoefler came close after a dangerous delivery into the penalty area, while Johan Manzambi tested Emiliano Martinez from distance after the Argentine goalkeeper recovered from a minor injury scare during the warmup.

Despite Freiburg's resilience, Villa's superior quality gradually began to show.
The breakthrough arrived four minutes before halftime from a cleverly worked corner routine. Rogers delivered a cross to the edge of the area where Youri Tielemans met the ball with a stunning volley that flew beyond Atubolu.
Villa doubled the lead moments before the interval when Emiliano Buendía found space outside the penalty area and curled a brilliant strike into the top-left corner.
Buoyed by confidence after the restart, Villa continued to dominate. Buendia nearly added another with an audacious chip before turning provider in the 58th minute. His cross took a favorable deflection into the path of Rogers, who slid home from close range to make it 3-0.
Villa continued to create chances as John McGinn was denied by Atubolu after Amadou Onana struck the post, but the outcome was already beyond doubt.
As the final whistle blew, jubilant celebrations erupted among Villa players and supporters as the club captured its first European trophy in 44 years. The success is Emery's fifth Europa League title as he previously won the crown three times with Sevilla and once with Villarreal.
