At a pivotal moment in the global transition toward a low-carbon energy system, hydrogen energy has emerged as a vital bridge between traditional energy sources and the clean energy of the future.

The International Hydrogen Development Symposium 2026, hosted by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, was successfully held in Hong Kong SAR from May 18 to 20.

The Hong Kong Green Energy Week Forum, one of the parallel sessions of the International Hydrogen Development Symposium 2026, was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on Wednesday.

One of the forum's major outcomes was the official establishment of the Secretariat of Hong Kong Green Energy Week (Hong Kong). Based at Hong Kong Baptist University, the secretariat complements the previously established Beijing Secretariat, creating a north-south coordination framework and marking a further improvement in the organizational structure of the Hong Kong Green Energy Week. The establishment of this key institution will provide strong support for integrating resources between the two locations and deepening international cooperation.

The symposium brought together representatives from government, academia and industry to engage in in-depth discussions on topics including high-quality international cooperation, the transformation of energy enterprises and green technology innovation.

China is at a critical stage in its transition from a major energy producer to a global energy powerhouse, and should strengthen the resilience of its energy supply, enhance technological self-reliance, and increase its leadership in global energy governance through high-quality international cooperation, said Xu Qinhua, vice chair of the Expert Committee of the China Petroleum Enterprise Association and professor at the Renmin University of China.
