Late on the night of May 17, torrential rain caused river waters to surge in Kaili, southwest China's Guizhou Province. To rescue a drowning resident, Huang Tongcai, the deputy director of the Baiwu Police Station, leaped into the raging Sanjiang River and secured a life buoy around the resident. Both were swept downstream by the powerful current and soon lost contact with the rescue team. After nearly 40 minutes of searching, Huang and the drowning resident were found having drifted two kilometers in the torrent. They were safely brought ashore and taken to the hospital for examination, with neither in life-threatening condition.
