Shenzhen Leopards stave off CBA playoffs elimination with win over Guangsha Lions

Sports Scene

In an intense CBA playoff showdown on Thursday, the Shenzhen Leopards used a balanced offensive effort with six players scoring in double figures to edge the defending champions the Guangsha Lions 91-80. This victory keeps their hopes alive in the best-of-five semifinal series, narrowing Guangsha's lead to 2-1.

Despite the absence of international MVP Terquavion Smith due to injury, Rong Zifeng ignited the Leopards with a stellar start, sinking eight points on flawless shooting. Shenzhen quickly raced to an 11-5 advantage within the first three minutes, showcasing their determination.

However, Guangsha found its offensive rhythm as Barry Brown, last year's Finals MVP, scored via a contested layup, helping the Lions to a 46-42 lead. Joshua Christopher then came alive, hitting key three-pointers that sparked a revival for the Leopards, who seized control to lead 66-62 by the end of the third quarter.

As Brown struggled and ultimately lost possession, Shenzhen capitalized on the opportunity. He Xining connected with Wang Haoran, who contributed two of his 13 points, extending the lead to 75-65 early in the fourth quarter. But the Lions weren't ready to fold, with Brown hitting a critical three-pointer to narrow the gap to five.

The Leopards countered swiftly, with CBA domestic MVP He Xining landing a timely three to reassert their dominance. Meanwhile, center Ibou Baji had been a defensive powerhouse but suffered a leg injury, leaving the court with just over a minute remaining.

Veteran Zhou Peng rose to the occasion off the bench, drilling a pivotal three-pointer from Rong's assist. As Guangsha rushed to inbound the ball, Brown missed another three, and Zhou snagged the rebound, igniting a fast break finished by He, making it 89-80.

The Leopards ultimately secured an 11-point victory, rejuvenating their campaign and setting the stage for a critical Game 4 in Shenzhen on Saturday.
