In a gripping final of the AFC U17 Asian Cup in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, China narrowly missed out on glory, finishing as runner-up after a 3-2 loss to Japan.

The match began with Japan's Tafuku Satomi breaking the deadlock in the 31st minute, capitalizing on a pass from Takeshi Wada and slotting the ball in from a challenging angle. The Samurai Blue extended their lead just before halftime. Kakeru Saito received a pinpoint through ball, deftly rounded China's goalkeeper Qin Ziniu, making it 2-0 in the 42nd minute.

As the first half drew to a close, Maki Kitahara added a third goal in stoppage time, striking from outside the penalty area and leaving Japan with a commanding 3-0 lead at the interval.

However, China displayed tenacity and grit upon returning to the pitch. Just three minutes into the second half, Wan Xiang launched a quick counterattack, chipping the ball over Japanese keeper Kosei Oshita to pull one back for China.

The match took a dramatic turn in the 79th minute when Zhao Songyuan was fouled in the box, earning China a penalty. The 17-year-old confidently converted the spot-kick, setting the stage for a tense finale as the score tightened to 3-2.

In a frantic push for an equalizer, China threw everything forward, yet Oshita was resolute, denying a last-minute header that could have levelled the match.

As the final whistle blew, Japan celebrated their fifth U17 Asian Cup title, while China, despite the disappointment, concluded an impressive tournament run. With eyes now firmly fixed on the FIFA U17 World Cup in November, China's young talents have shown they are a force to be reckoned with on the Asian stage, ensuring that the journey is far from over.
