China sends work team to Chongqing after Yongchuan floods leave 3 dead, 17 missing

Flash floods and geological disasters break out in Yongchuan District after extreme short-duration torrential rain hit the area overnight in China's Chongqing Municipality from May 23 to 24. /VCG

The office of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters on Sunday dispatched a work team to southwest China's Chongqing Municipality to guide flood control and disaster relief efforts, the Ministry of Emergency Management said.

Three people were killed and 17 others were unaccounted for after heavy rainfall hit Yongchuan District in Chongqing starting Saturday night, according to local authorities.

In addition, two people were also unaccounted for after the rain lashed Beibei District in the municipality.

Rescue and response efforts are currently underway.

China's top economic planner allocated 20 million yuan ($2.94 million) in central budget outlays ​for ​disaster ⁠recovery and the restoration of infrastructure and ​public services in Chongqing, ​the ⁠National Development and Reform Commission said on Sunday.
