The Yingtianmen Gate is a must-visit destination in Luoyang, Henan Province, offering a glimpse into the city's ancient grandeur.
First built in AD 605, Yingtianmen was the main southern gate of Luoyang's palace city during the Sui and Tang dynasties. Widely regarded as a masterpiece of ancient Chinese city gate architecture, it bore witness to major state ceremonies and diplomatic occasions, including the enthronement of Wu Zetian, the only female emperor in Chinese history.
The iconic gate has appeared or been artistically reimagined in many screen productions set in the Tang Dynasty, including the Detective Dee film series and the TV series Luoyang, Flourished Peon and In the Name of Blossom.
The present-day Yingtianmen was reconstructed in the 2010s atop the original archaeological remains and functions as a site museum, where the preserved ruins of the ancient gate, together with exhibits such as a scale model and multimedia displays, showcase the history and development of Luoyang during the Sui and Tang dynasties.
Visitors can also enjoy immersive attractions such as 3D projection shows highlighting the city's rich cultural heritage, and ascend the gate tower for views of the nearby Mingtang and Tiantang, two other well-known landmarks in the city.
