Aging is inevitable, but exercise can help slow down functional decline and improve quality of life.
Regular exercise strengthens heart, lung, liver and brain function while reducing the risk of falls in older adults, says Jiang Qing, vice dean and professor of Nanjing University Medical School and chief physician of the Department of Sports Medicine and Adult Reconstructive Surgery of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital. Recommended routines include 30 minutes of exercise every day, strength training twice a week, and stretching once or twice a week.
Jiang also noted that the intensity and type of exercises should match a person's age and physical condition. He advised against intense workouts on an empty stomach or focusing excessively on a single type of exercise.
