At the Astronaut Center of China, two faces have become the latest symbols of a historic partnership between China and Pakistan: Muhammad Zeeshan Ali and Khurram Daud. As the first foreign candidates selected for China's manned space program, they are currently undergoing rigorous training, not only for an upcoming spaceflight mission, but also as representatives of a new era in the "ironclad" friendship between Beijing and Islamabad.
This leap from terrestrial infrastructure to the cosmos serves as a fitting metaphor for the current state of China-Pakistan relations as they mark their traditional friendship that has weathered 75 years of geopolitical shifts. On Monday, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with visiting Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Great Hall of the People.
The high-profile meeting, which took place less than a month after Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari's visit to China, signals a rapid intensification of diplomatic and strategic engagement between the two close neighbors. This marks a pivotal moment as both nations seek to elevate their all-weather strategic partnership into a more dynamic and multifaceted collaboration.
Building on 75 years of ironclad friendship
During Monday's meeting, President Xi noted that over the past 75 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China and Pakistan have enjoyed mutual understanding, trust and support, and forged an unbreakable traditional friendship. No matter how the international landscape may evolve, Xi stressed, Beijing will always prioritize the development of China-Pakistan relations in its neighborhood diplomacy.
Sharif echoed that the ironclad friendship between Pakistan and China was forged personally by the elder generation of leaders, and is growing ever stronger and next to none.
This enduring bond is already being passed to the next generation. Reflecting on a recent letter from Pakistani students at Tianjin University, who voiced their aspiration to become builders of cooperation, promoters of exchanges, and guardians of friendship between the two countries, Xi said he was truly heartened to see that the cause of bilateral friendship has been carried on by young successors. He called on both sides to accelerate the development of an even closer China-Pakistan community with a shared future in the new era and deliver more outcomes from their all-weather cooperation to better benefit the two peoples.
Steering ties with strong political trust
At the core of Monday's discussions was a mutual reaffirmation of each other's fundamental political interests. President Xi stressed that China firmly supports Pakistan in safeguarding its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, adding that Beijing is ready to maintain high-level exchanges and strengthen strategic communication to steer the bilateral relationship forward in the right direction.
In response, Prime Minister Sharif reaffirmed that Pakistan firmly upholds the one-China principle and stands resolutely with China on all issues concerning its core interests, pledging that Pakistan will always be China's good friend and good partner.

From grand corridors to 'small but beautiful' projects
Seventy-five years of diplomatic ties have laid a dense foundation of interlocking interests, and both leaders made clear they intend to build on it.
Xi called on both sides to make solid progress in implementing the action plan to foster an even closer China-Pakistan community with a shared future in the new era, and deepen all-round cooperation in areas such as agriculture, industry, artificial intelligence (AI) and talent cultivation. He also called for advancing both major signature projects and "small but beautiful" livelihood initiatives – a formulation that signals Beijing's shift toward smaller-scale, ground-level projects with tangible social benefits, alongside headline infrastructure.
According to Wang Le, a researcher at the East China Normal University, these evolving priorities reveal that China-Pakistan relations are transitioning into a more comprehensive, future-oriented and multidimensional relationship.
Sharif, for his part, pledged to deepen Belt and Road cooperation and advance the development of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, expressing hope that the relationship will continuously grow and benefit the people of both nations.
The economic picture backing that agenda has been trending in a positive direction. According to data from China's General Administration of Customs, the value of imports and exports between two sides exceeded $6.4 billion in the first quarter of 2026. Exports from China to Pakistan hit over $5.5 billion while imports from Pakistan to China increased by 45% to $930 million. On the investment side, data from the State Bank of Pakistan shows that China remained Pakistan's largest foreign investor from July 2025 to April this year, contributing $740 million – more than half of Pakistan's total foreign inflows.
Strategic security and multilateral coordination
Beyond economics, the two sides also agreed on jointly safeguarding regional peace and stability.
Xi called for higher-level security cooperation in broader areas, and commended Pakistan for taking the initiative to play a mediating role in restoring peace in the Middle East, while Sharif thanked China for supporting Pakistan's mediation of the negotiations between the United States and Iran. Sharif described the four propositions put forward by President Xi on the Middle East situation as a guiding framework for peace in the region.
Xi also urged both sides to maintain close communication and coordination, jointly oppose unilateralism and the Cold War mentality, and promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and an economic globalization that is universally beneficial and inclusive – a shared vision that has become central to the Global South narrative both Beijing and Islamabad have championed.
As global uncertainties multiply, this ironclad partnership stands as a vital pillar of stability, fortified by a future-oriented economic transition and deeper security ties. By continuously amplifying the voice of the Global South, Beijing and Islamabad are injecting much-needed predictability into a rapidly changing international order.
