China's Kalamaili Nature Reserve is home to the Przewalski's horse, the only true wild horse left on Earth. These living fossils vanished from China but were brought back from Europe and North America in 1985. After two decades of breeding, the first group was released in 2001. Today, Kalamaili is the world's largest reintroduction site. By the end of 2025, nearly 400 wild horses lived there, and China's total has reached almost 1,000, with one of the world's highest breeding success rates.
