The audience response has been strong. On film review platform Douban, more than 706,000 users have rated the film, giving it an average score of 9.2 out of 10. It currently holds the highest opening rating of any domestic film released this year.
At its core, Dear You resonates deeply with audiences through an emotional story built around "qiaopi" – handwritten letters and money remittances once sent home by overseas Chinese migrants to their families in southern China. Using these letters as an emotional thread, the film weaves a multi-generational narrative about migration, separation and enduring family ties across time and distance.
