Made of grass, flowers and succulents, the 5.2-meter-tall puppy sculpture was created as part of the 2026 Shanghai International Flower Show, held from April 18 to May 10. Featuring a vivid yet slightly scruffy look, the "puppy" conveys an unpolished yet comforting charm that has resonated with many visitors, drawing crowds eager to see it and take photos.

Lighting was later added to illuminate the sculpture at night, and it was not removed after the flower show ended as so many people expressed their hope that it would remain. The Blossom Pet Land exhibition area, where the "Scruffy Puppy" is located, will remain in place until the end of June, while local authorities evaluate whether the puppy sculpture could become a permanent feature.

An online campaign has also been launched to solicit an official name for the "puppy," while related cultural and creative products are in development.

By responding to public affection for the sculpture, Shanghai has amplified the cultural and commercial value of the "puppy," boosting consumption in nearby areas and transforming a temporary attraction into a lasting urban memory that conveys the warmth of city governance.
