China's Wang Xiyu reached the third round at the French Open for the first time in her career on Wednesday, while compatriot Wang Xinyu bowed out following a hard-fought three-set defeat in Paris.
Wang Xiyu became the last remaining Chinese player in the women's singles draw after American 26th seed Hailey Baptiste retired injured in their second-round match on Court Suzanne Lenglen.
China's World No. 148 had enjoyed a strong start before the match was cut short. Wang Xiyu broke serve in the opening game, but Baptiste responded immediately in the second. She regained control with another break in the fifth game and moved ahead 4-2 after holding serve comfortably.
Wang Xiyu was serving for the set at 5-4, with the 10th game on deuce, when Baptiste slipped while hitting a shot and found herself unable to continue due to injury.
The contest lasted just 51 minutes before Wang Xiyu advanced to the last 32. The win at Roland Garros marked her third time reaching the third round of a Grand Slam, having previously achieved the feat at the US Open in 2022.
She will next face Ukraine's Yuliia Starodubtseva for a place in the round of 16. Starodubtseva produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament after rallying past World No. 2 Elena Rybakina in three sets earlier in the day.
