In Baoting, Hainan, bamboo tube rice is more than a meal – it's living cultural heritage. When Li ethnic group hunted or farmed in the mountains, they turned to nature for their cooking: sticky Shanlan rice, wild game or pork, stuffed into fresh bamboo tubes, sealed with banana leaves, and slowly-roasted over an open fire. The result? Tender rice infused with bamboo aroma and savory juices – soft, fragrant, and unforgettable. Today, this time-honored cooking method, recognized as an intangible cultural heritage, is still passed down through Li families, keeping their forest roots alive in every bite.
