China's Wang Xiyu continued her impressive run at Roland Garros by reaching the French Open women's singles last 16 for the first time in her career with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Ukraine's Yuliia Starodubtseva on Friday.

The 25-year-old had to overcome a difficult start on Court 7 in Paris after falling 0-3 behind in the opening set. Wang quickly settled into the contest, however, breaking Starodubtseva in the fourth game before reeling off six consecutive games to take the set 6-3.

The second set proved far more competitive as neither player was able to establish clear control. Wang stayed composed in the decisive moments and secured the crucial break late in the set before serving out a 7-5 victory to book her place in the fourth round.

Ranked No. 148 in the world, Wang entered the tournament as one of the lower-ranked players in the main draw but has now produced the best Grand Slam result of her career. She also became the only Chinese player remaining in the singles draw at this year's French Open.

Wang had already made history earlier in the week by reaching the third round at Roland Garros for the first time. Her second-round victory came when American 26th seed Hailey Baptiste was forced to retire with a knee injury during the opening set of their match on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Starodubtseva arrived in the third round full of confidence after producing one of the tournament's biggest upsets. The Ukrainian qualifier rallied from a set down to eliminate world No. 2 Elena Rybakina and reach the last 32 of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.

Wang's victory adds another milestone to a season that has seen her fight back from injury and ranking setbacks. A former US Open girls' singles champion in 2018, the left-hander is now enjoying her deepest run at Roland Garros and will look to continue her breakthrough campaign when she returns to court in the fourth round.
