59-year-old Chinese climber with prosthetic leg summits Mount Qomolangma

A 59-year-old Chinese man has become the first person from North China's Hebei Province and the third amputee in China to summit Mount Qomolangma.

After losing his left leg in a traffic accident in 2009, Song Jitie spent years training, climbing progressively higher peaks, battling intense pain caused by extreme cold, rough terrain and his prosthetic leg. He finally stood atop Mount Qomolangma on May 21, 2026.
