What does it mean to live a long life?
Lifespan, which is the time from birth to death, is not the full picture, according to Dr. Li Jian'an. What also matters is healthspan, which Li defines as "the years a person can live independently, with dignity and purpose."
Li is the honorary dean of the School of Rehabilitation Medicine at Nanjing Medical University and honorary director of the Rehabilitation Medicine Center at Jiangsu Province Hospital.
As a leading expert in rehabilitation medicine, Li advocates three key pillars of healthy aging: staying active, eating well and maintaining mental well-being.
At 74, Li continues to practice what he preaches. Earlier this year, he completed the grueling "777 Challenge" – seven marathons across seven continents in seven consecutive days, covering nearly 295 kilometers while spending over 60 hours in the air. As the oldest participant in the event, he sees movement not only as exercise, but as a lifelong commitment to health and curiosity.
