China's Wang Xiyu saw her best-ever Grand Slam campaign come to an end at Roland Garros on Sunday, falling to Romania's Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 7-6(4) in the women's singles fourth round.

The defeat ended a remarkable run for Wang, who had battled through qualifying to reach the last 16 of a major for the first time in her career. The 25-year-old was also the only Chinese player to advance beyond the second round of the women's singles draw in Paris this year.

Playing on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, Wang struggled early against the experienced Romanian, who quickly settled into the match with aggressive baseline play and strong serving. Cirstea secured an early break and raced into a 5-1 lead before closing out the opening set 6-3.

The second set proved far more competitive. Wang began mixing up her game with greater variety and repeatedly tested Cirstea in long rallies from the back of the court. After trailing 5-2, the Chinese left-hander mounted an impressive comeback, winning four consecutive games and moving within one game of forcing a deciding set.

However, Cirstea responded under pressure by holding serve to level at 6-6 before taking control of the tiebreak. The Romanian relied on her experience in the closing stages, sealing victory after one hour and 55 minutes.

The win sent Cirstea into the French Open quarterfinals for the first time since 2009, completing a 17-year return to the last eight at Roland Garros. At 36 years old, she became one of the tournament's surprise stories after arriving in Paris following a strong clay-court season that included a victory over world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in Rome.

The quarterfinal appearance is only the third Grand Slam last-eight showing of Cirstea's career and comes during what she has said will be her final season on tour. The Romanian also became the oldest player in the Open Era to record a 6-0, 6-0 victory in a women's singles main-draw match at a major earlier in the tournament.

Despite the loss, Wang leaves Paris with several milestones. Ranked outside the world's top 100 entering the tournament, she came through qualifying and produced the deepest Grand Slam run of her career, continuing a steady resurgence after reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open earlier this season.
