Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Monday that Armenia would continue to work within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) "calmly and confidently," amid growing debate over Armenia's possible future membership of the European Union (EU).

In a video message posted on social media, Pashinyan said the question of whether Armenia should choose between the EU and the Russia-led EAEU remains largely theoretical at this stage.

His remarks came after the presidents of Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan issued a joint statement following a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council on May 29, calling on Armenia to hold a referendum on whether it intends to pursue EU membership or remain in the EAEU.

Pashinyan rejected the proposal, saying it would be illogical and unjustified to hold such a referendum before Armenia formally applies for EU membership or comes close to obtaining EU candidate status.

He also stressed the importance of Armenia's relationship with Russia, describing bilateral ties as being in a positive period of transformation.

"Under these new circumstances, we are building new relations with Russia, and I believe we will succeed in this effort," Pashinyan said.

Meanwhile, Russia's Foreign Ministry said on May 30 that Moscow had recalled its ambassador to Armenia for consultations over Armenia's increasing alignment with the European Union. The ministry said Armenia's actions were undermining cooperation within the framework of the EAEU.

Armenia has taken steps toward closer integration with the EU in recent years. On April 4, 2025, Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan signed a law launching the process of Armenia's accession to the European Union.
