Chongqing Animation Film Week draws 500 global entries

Animation professionals, filmmakers and audience members from around the world are set to gather for the 2026 Chongqing International Animation Film Week from June 9 to 13.

A total of 501 animated works from countries including the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, Spain, Australia and Brazil have been submitted for this the event’s main competition section, with 45 shortlisted titles. The jury is headed by Rob Minkoff, co-director of Disney's The Lion King.

This event will feature screenings, industry forums, master classes, technology exhibitions and industry networking events. Organizers say the program aims to highlight the growing role of new technologies in animation and filmmaking, including AI-powered production tools and virtual filmmaking.

Chongqing has become an increasingly important production hub for China's film and television industry, and more than 500 film and TV productions have been filmed in the city. Yongchuan, the host district, has developed virtual production studios and an AI-powered filmmaking technology sector which have been used in more than 140 productions, including the animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2.

Alongside the professional events, the film week will also feature a host of public screenings, an animation-themed market and outdoor concerts. A citywide promotional campaign will offer discounts at tourist attractions, hotels and shopping centers for moviegoers during the event.
