US officials said they had uncovered a sophisticated drug-smuggling tunnel running beneath the US-Mexico border from Tijuana to a retail store near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in California. The tunnel was estimated to be 590 meters long and 16.8 meters deep, and featured reinforced walls, rail and ventilation systems, electricity and a hydraulic lift. Investigators said more than $45 million worth of cocaine had been transported through the tunnel. Four people have been charged in connection with the case.
