A peacekeeper died early Thursday morning from injuries sustained when mortar shells struck his position in southeastern Lebanon the previous night, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said.

In a social media post, UNIFIL said two other peacekeepers were injured in the incident and are receiving treatment at a medical facility inside one of its bases.

UNIFIL has launched an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the incident.
