Nautilus: A "living fossil" of the ocean

More than 500 million years ago, the ancestors of the nautilus had already appeared on Earth. This ancient creature contains a series of chambers within its spiraled shell. By regulating the balance of gas and liquid inside these chambers, it can rise and descend freely through the ocean – like a natural submarine.

The nautilus propels itself using a muscular siphon. By expelling water in short bursts, it creates jet propulsion and moves backward through the sea. Its movement is remarkably graceful, almost otherworldly.

Today, the nautilus is a protected species, listed in CITES Appendix II.
