Synopsis:
Set in the unforgiving landscape of a Kazakh neo-western, the film tells the story of a desperate man pushed to the brink. To fund his gravely ill son's life-saving surgery, the protagonist risks everything by agreeing to take part in a robbery. However, at a secluded gas station at night, the plan shatters when a fatal gunshot sparks a brutal chain of murders. Confined to an interrogation room, he is forced to reconstruct the chronology of that nightmarish evening, even as he is tormented by inner turmoil and a 30-year-old childhood trauma tied to his late father.
Why we recommend it:
This film is the narrative feature debut of director Alibi Mukushev. From writing the first draft of its script in 2020, to entering production in 2023 and finally to its world premiere in 2026, this dedicated work spans a total of six years in the making. Seamlessly blending the stark texture of a Kazakh neo-Western with the sharp momentum of a crime road-movie, the film showcases the bold narrative ambition of contemporary Central Asian cinema. Employing a non-linear structure and poignant flashbacks, the story focuses on a father's desperate choices under extreme pressure and the inescapable inner turmoil that haunts him.
On the surface, it tracks a nightmarish chain of murders triggered by a robbery gone awry; at its core, it is a deep exploration of a childhood trauma that spans three decades, a strained and complex father-son relationship, and the protagonist's psychological reckoning set within the confines of an interrogation room.
Tense, restrained and layered with psychological suspense, the film masterfully depicts how the ghosts of the past can collide head-on with harsh reality. Audiences will also appreciate the striking visual contrast between the vast, desolate Kazakh landscape and the claustrophobic, suffocating interrogation space, presenting a highly sophisticated and unified aesthetic. Furthermore, the film offers a richly cinematic experience, seamlessly weaving subtle homages to cinematic classics such as Mirror, Drive, Goodfellas, and Once Upon a Time in America.
