Drama

Egypt

Synopsis:

Set in Cairo, the film follows Toha, an eight-year-old maid whose greatest wish is to organize a perfect birthday party for her best friend Nelly. As Nelly struggles with her parents' failing marriage and a birthday seemingly forgotten by her family, Toha devotes herself to making the celebration happen. Through cakes, decorations and countless small preparations, she tries to create a magical day not only for Nelly, but also for herself – a child who has never experienced such a celebration. As the party approaches, however, Toha becomes increasingly aware of the social divide that separates the two girls. What begins as an innocent dream gradually evolves into a poignant coming-of-age story about friendship, class and the loss of childhood innocence.

Why we recommend it:

In her feature debut, Sarah Goher explores social inequality through the eyes of a child, delivering a story that is both intimate and emotionally powerful. Rather than relying on overt social commentary, the film reveals the realities of class divisions through everyday interactions and the unwavering optimism of its young protagonist. The remarkable performance by Doha Ramadan anchors the film with authenticity and warmth, making Toha's hopes and disappointments deeply affecting. By centering the narrative on a birthday celebration – a universal symbol of childhood joy – the film transforms a simple event into a moving reflection on privilege, belonging and human dignity. Sensitive, compassionate and beautifully observed, Happy Birthday stands out as a compelling new voice in contemporary Egyptian cinema.
