Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Friday condemned the United States for further tightening restrictions on Cuba's access to oil, describing the move as "without limits" in its hostility toward the Caribbean nation.

In a post on social media, Diaz-Canel said Washington had already prohibited third countries from supplying fuel to Cuba and was now expanding sanctions to target the Cuban state oil company while issuing warnings to entities engaging in trade with it.

He accused the United States of using "absurd pretexts" to justify its actions, arguing that the ultimate goal was to "suffocate the Cuban people" and force them into submission through shortages of food, energy and medicine.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla also wrote on social media that the US oil restrictions were directly affecting Cuba's supplies of food and medicine, adding that the entire population was "being punished." He said Washington had openly stated that its policy aimed to trigger social unrest in Cuba.

The comments came after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new sanctions on Cuba's state oil company on Thursday, further expanding economic pressure measures against the country.

The United States has maintained a long-standing economic, financial, and trade embargo on Cuba for decades. Washington has recently intensified pressure on several countries, including Venezuela and Iran, and US President Donald Trump has also warned that Cuba could be the next target while advocating for increased pressure on Havana, including restrictions related to oil supplies.
