Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi speaks about the memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached with the United States and regional developments at a meeting with ambassadors and diplomatic representatives in Tehran, Iran, June 16, 2026. /VCG
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Tuesday that a new round of US-Iran negotiations will begin in Switzerland on Friday.
Araghchi stressed that Tehran considers an end to the conflict in Lebanon a precondition for regional deescalation. He warned that any Israeli military action in Lebanon or continued presence of Israeli forces on Lebanese territory would, in Iran's view, breach the memorandum of understanding (MoU), which he defined as an understanding between the US and Israel on one side, and Iran and Hezbollah on the other.
The upcoming talks will follow a first-phase MoU covering a ceasefire, the Strait of Hormuz, the lifting of the maritime blockade and reconstruction, Araghchi said.
A second 60-day phase will concentrate on Iran's nuclear program and sanctions relief, with the aim of reaching a comprehensive agreement.
