In the 1930s, while working in Shanghai, American doctor Ma Haide (George Hatem) witnessed the hardships faced by ordinary Chinese people and the sacrifices made by young revolutionaries. In 1936, he traveled to Yan'an, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, and became a foreign doctor serving with the Chinese Red Army, beginning a lifelong connection with the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese people.
