What can two decades of steady work achieve?

In 2003, east China's Zhejiang Province launched the "Thousand Villages Demonstration and Ten Thousand Villages Renovation" project, an initiative aimed at comprehensively renovating ten thousand administrative villages in the province and building a thousand key villages of them into all-round well-off model villages. Since then, polluted waterways have been cleaned up, waste treatment has improved and thousands of villages have been transformed into beautiful, livable communities.

The results are tangible. In 2025, the per capita disposable income of rural residents in Zhejiang reached 45,154 yuan (about $6,670), ranking first among China's provincial-level regions for the 41st consecutive year. As China moves forward with rural revitalization during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), Zhejiang's experience shows how long-term, practical efforts can bring lasting benefits to rural communities.
