Terraced fields cascade down the mountainside, where a "fiery dragon" dances through the night. At Longsheng County in south China's Guilin, Guangxi, village residents have celebrated the Shuyang Festival, a traditional farming festival, for over 1,000 years. Held around Grain in Ear – one of the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms – which marks the rice-planting season, the festival is a way for local farming communities to pray for a good harvest. Village residents toil in the paddies by day; as night falls, torches flicker to life, coiling like a dragon along the mountain ridges. Local women carry torches as they tread across the terraces, where starlight meets firelight, illuminating a season of labor and a harvest of hopes.
