It's harvest season for the space-bred lotus – a variety cultivated through space mutation breeding.
In Jiatang Village in Tunchang County, Hainan, vast lotus ponds shimmer under the sun, heavy with plump seed pods. This year, the village's 13-hectare plant beds are yielding up to 6,000 kilograms of fresh lotus pods per hectare alone.
Inspired by this success, neighboring villages have followed suit, expanding Tunchang's total lotus fields to over 133 hectares.
