Village voyage: The Longji Terraced Fields in Guangxi

CGTN

00:16

Thousand-year terraces, poetry etched into the earth. The Longji Terraced Fields are located on Longji Mountain in Longsheng County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. First constructed over 2,300 years ago during the Qin and Han dynasties, they spiral from the foot of the mountains up to nearly 1,000 meters above sea level, with a vertical drop of over 860 meters and as many as 1,100 tiers. Every patch of soil has been cultivated into farmland, with the largest plot measuring no more than one mu (667 square meters) and the smallest accommodating just three rice seedlings.

A local saying goes: "A frog can leap across three fields." The agricultural wisdom of the Zhuang and Yao ancestors who worked within the contours of the mountains has taken shape here in the form of the grandest curves on earth. In 2018, the site was recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS).
