Haifeng's Piano: How music makes a boy with autism shine bright

Zhao Ying

Diagnosed with autism at age three, Shu Haifeng lacked the muscle tone in his fingers to even manage a simple thumbs-up by age four. Back then, no one could have imagined that over a decade later, he would stand on the stage of the Beijing Winter Olympics 300-day countdown - his fingers flying across the keys in a brilliant four-hand piano duet with Chinese virtuoso Lang Lang.

For Haifeng, the piano became a beam of light that illuminated his isolated world - a light fueled by a family's unwavering, daily devotion, and a spirit that refused to ever back down.
