Belgium overturned a two-goal deficit and scored from the penalty spot deep into extra time to beat Senegal 3-2 in Seattle on Wednesday, completing the biggest comeback so far at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr had given Senegal a 2-0 lead with just five minutes remaining in normal time, but late strikes by Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans sent the round-of-32 match into extra time.

Tielemans then converted a penalty kick in the 125th minute of the game, the latest goal in the tournament's history.

"Being part of this comeback is a proud moment, because I scored the last two goals to give the team the win today. I'm very proud of that, to be able to help the team to score goals and bring us over the line," Tielemans said.

He was fouled with mere seconds to go, and with a penalty shootout looming, the referee awarded the spot kick after a video review, ignoring protests from the Senegalese players.

"I do not want to interpret the decision. We all have different interpretations when it comes to awarding a penalty," Senegal coach Pape Thiaw said. "I'd rather not comment, not interpreting the referee's decision."

Belgium's win marked the second time in the last 11 World Cups that they trailed by two or more goals in the knockout phase and still advanced. The European side secured a 3-2 victory over Japan in the same way in the round of 16 at the 2018 edition.

"Senegal deserved to win," Belgium coach Rudi Garcia said. "But I am happy it was us."

Belgium's opponent in the round of 16 will be co-host USA, who defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the evening match in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Earlier in the day, Harry Kane made sure England avoided an early exit from the inaugural 48-team World Cup, notching two second-half goals in a 2-1 come-from-behind triumph against the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The late victory in Atlanta earned the 1966 champions a spot in the last 16 and a showdown against co-host Mexico.
