Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi on Wednesday announced the conclusion of talks in Qatar on the implementation of a peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States.
Iran and the United States negotiators held separate meetings with Qatari and Pakistani mediators, Qatar's foreign ministry said.
Sources familiar with the discussions told Reuters that negotiators for the two countries spent two days in Doha discussing maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and unfreezing Iran's funds, two critical issues under the initial agreement.
Gharibabadi said the two sides discussed issues related to the use of part of Iran's frozen assets worth $6 billion, saying it was decided that necessary goods would be purchased based on Iran's needs and delivered to the country.
During the discussions, the Iranian delegation pointed out and discussed US violations of its obligations under Paragraph 1 of the MoU, which pertains to ending the war in Lebanon, according to IRNA.
It also raised concerns over reports that the United States was reinforcing its military equipment and forces in West Asia, as well as what it described as "threatening and interventionist" remarks by US officials.
A monitoring group's emergency communication channel would be established by Thursday and violations of the MoU would be reported, discussed and decided upon in an official and documented manner, according to Gharibabadi.
US President Donald Trump told the reporters that the two sides were making progress on possible limits to Iran's nuclear program. "The denuclearization of Iran is moving along well," he said.
But the sources said the nuclear program did not come up in the talks. US Vice President JD Vance said that matter would be addressed later.
The next meeting will take place after the conclusion of funeral ceremonies for Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, which are scheduled to end on July 9, Qatar's Foreign Ministry said.
Israeli strikes continue in southern Lebanon
Israeli military activities continued across southern Lebanon on Wednesday, with drone strikes, artillery shelling, explosions and other military operations reported in several areas, according to Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA).
The NNA said an Israeli drone struck a parked vehicle in the southern town of Nabatieh al-Fawqa. It added that local relief volunteers came under Israeli fire while on their way to extinguish the blaze caused by the strike, though no injuries were reported. Elsewhere, the agency reported explosions and artillery shelling in several areas of the Bint Jbeil district.
The latest incidents occurred despite the framework agreement recently reached between Lebanon and Israel aimed at ending hostilities along the border.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Wednesday defended the framework agreement, which has drawn domestic criticism over concerns that it could compromise Lebanon's sovereignty. He said diplomacy remains the only viable alternative to war and rejected the criticism.
Aoun said the framework is a basis for negotiations aimed at securing an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory, the return of displaced people, and international support.
