The yoga village of grannies

In Yugouliang, Hebei Province, a group of elders averaging 65 years old have earned their village the title of China's "Yoga Village" through their daily practice in the fields. The everyday habit of sitting cross-legged on the kang, a traditional heated brick bed, has been transformed into a fitness routine. Today, 70-year-olds doing splits and 80-year-olds nailing headstands have become a common sight in the village. No designer yoga wear – just white gloves and blue headscarves are the standard gear. The elders strike challenging poses anytime, anywhere – in the wheat fields, beside the sheep, or even by the kitchen stove. This small village 300 kilometers from Beijing embodies the spirit of yoga in the most down-to-earth way.
