Oyarzabal's brace powers Spain past Austria 3-0 into World Cup last 16

Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice as Spain beat Austria 3-0 in Inglewood on Thursday to secure its place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16.

Luis de la Fuente's side, seeking its first World Cup knockout win since 2010, controlled the match from the outset, although Marc Cucurella saw a first-half effort ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper following a corner.

Spain eventually made its dominance count in the 36th minute when Oyarzabal met a low cross from Cucurella to give the European champions a deserved lead.

Austria, which finished second in Group J after a 3-3 draw with Algeria, threatened occasionally through Michael Gregoritsch and Marcel Sabitzer but struggled to consistently break through Spain's defensive structure.

After the break, Spain maintained control and doubled its lead in the 66th minute when Pedro Porro arrived in the box to head in Alex Baena's cross for his first international goal.

Oyarzabal added his second in the 89th minute, turning in another Cucurella delivery to complete the win and send Spain into a round-of-16 clash with Portugal.

Portugal edged Croatia 2-1 in another dramatic World Cup round-of-32 contest, with substitute Goncalo Ramos heading home a stoppage-time winner to send Roberto Martinez's side into the round of 16.

The Portuguese controlled much of the opening half and created the better opportunities, but Dominik Livakovic kept Croatia level with a series of important saves.  41-year-old Selecao captain Ronaldo also saw an excellent finish ruled out for offside after a VAR review before the interval.

Croatia emerged with greater purpose after the restart and broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute when Josip Stanisic's cross reached Ivan Perisic, who finished from close range at the back post.

Portugal hit back soon afterwards when referee Espen Eskas awarded a penalty following a VAR review for Nikola Vlasic's foul on Renato Veiga. Ronaldo stepped up and calmly converted to score his first goal in a World Cup knockout match.

As both teams chased a winner, Mateo Kovacic struck the post and later forced Diogo Costa into a fine save, while Portugal continued to push forward through Rafael Leao and Ronaldo in an increasingly open contest.

Ramos eventually settled the tie in stoppage time, powering Leao's cross past Livakovic with a header. Croatia thought they had rescued extra time moments later through Josko Gvardiol, but VAR ruled out the goal after determining Igor Matanovic had made a slight touch before the ball reached an offside Mario Pasalic, confirming Portugal's place in the round of 16.

In the final match of the day, Switzerland secured a 2-0 win over Algeria in Vancouver, with Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye scoring on either side of half-time. Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute from close range after Johan Manzambi's driving run and cut-back, giving Switzerland an early lead against the run of play.

Algeria responded with greater possession and several attacking spells, with Riyad Mahrez heavily involved in build-up play and Ibrahim Maza missing a good first-half chance. However, Switzerland remained compact and efficient, and the team doubled its advantage seconds after the restart when Ndoye capitalised on a defensive lapse to finish into the far corner.

From there, Switzerland controlled the tempo with Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler stabilising midfield, limiting Algeria's ability to create clear chances despite continued pressure. The North African side made multiple substitutions in search of a response, but Murat Yakin's team held firm to secure a clean sheet and a place in the round of 16.
