Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced his resignation on Friday, automatically triggering the dismissal of the entire government under the country's constitution, the official Moldpres news agency reported.

In a social media post, Munteanu said he believed he could help improve the country's situation when he accepted the position in November 2025. However, he decided to resign upon realizing that he could no longer perform his duties in accordance with his principles and beliefs.

Following Munteanu's announcement, Moldovan President Maia Sandu launched consultations with parliamentary factions to designate a new candidate for prime minister in accordance with legal provisions.

Moldova's supreme law stipulates that following the prime minister's resignation, the executive branch shall perform only the functions of administering public affairs until the members of a new government are sworn in.

The prime minister-designate must, within 15 days of being designated, seek a parliamentary vote of confidence for the government's program and proposed cabinet.
