Two people have died and about 55,000 residents have been affected by severe flooding in Nanning, capital of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, local authorities said on Monday.

At a press conference on flood-control and disaster relief efforts, officials said torrential rain battered Nanning from 8 a.m. on July 4 to 7 p.m. on July 6, triggering widespread flooding in Hengzhou City and Binyang County.

The heavy rainfall led to overtopping and localized breaches at the Liulan and Yunbiao reservoirs in Hengzhou, aggravating flood conditions in surrounding areas. Local authorities have launched emergency response and rescue operations following the incidents.

According to preliminary statistics, about 55,000 people have been affected by the flooding. Authorities have evacuated approximately 48,000 residents to safer locations. Police have confirmed two deaths linked to the disaster as of Monday evening.

The flooding was triggered by heavy rainfall associated with Typhoon Maysak, which has continued to bring downpours to Guangxi after moving inland. Rescue, evacuation and disaster relief efforts remain underway.
