Parts of southern and central China remained on high alert on Tuesday as the remnants of Typhoon Maysak continued to bring torrential rain, prompting a city in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to raise its highest flood emergency response and leaving at least eight people dead in Hubei Province. While heavy rain is expected to persist across several provinces, high-temperature weather is developing across much of northern and southern China.

On Tuesday, authorities in Guangxi's Guigang City upgraded the local flood and typhoon emergency response from Level II to the highest Level I, at 8 a.m. Affected by Typhoon Maysak, much of the city experienced heavy to torrential rain, with some areas hit by extreme rainstorm. Several rivers rose above warning levels, and the water level at the Yujiang River's Guigang hydrological station was forecast to peak at around 47.5 meters at around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, exceeding the warning water level by 6.3 meters.

The severe weather has also taken a deadly toll in central China's Hubei Province.

According to the provincial emergency management authorities, severe convective weather swept across eastern Hubei on Monday night, leaving at least eight people dead and one missing.

Between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., cities including Huangshi, Huanggang, Ezhou and Xianning were battered by thunderstorms and powerful winds, with tornadoes reported in some areas. Rescue operations are underway as authorities continue to assess the damage.

Remnants continue to bring heavy rain

The remnants of Typhoon Maysak continue to move inland after weakening into a tropical depression over northern Guangxi on Monday morning. Combined with the southwest monsoon, the system brought heavy rainfall in Guangxi, Hunan and Hubei, with heavy to torrential rain in some areas.

The system is expected to bring heavy rain to parts of Jiangsu, Anhui and Shandong on Tuesday, while eastern Guangxi and western Guangdong remain under persistent downpours.

As the remnants continue to affect multiple provinces, authorities urged the public to stay updated on weather warnings and take precautions when traveling. Meanwhile, authorities warned that recent heavy rainfall has left soils in Guangxi and Guangdong saturated, raising the risk of disasters as rain continues to fall.

The typhoon's remnants also hit neighboring Vietnam, where heavy rain and landslides damaged homes, farmland and infrastructure in the northern provinces of Lao Cai and Cao Bang from July 4 to 6, with no casualties reported, according to the Vietnam News Agency on Monday.

In Lao Cai, preliminary losses were estimated at nearly 6.3 billion Vietnamese dong (about $250,000), with 73 houses affected, more than 67 hectares of crops inundated and multiple landslides disrupting transport. Cao Bang reported damage to 34 houses, roads, irrigation facilities and more than 12 hectares of crops, with losses estimated at 1.5 billion Vietnamese dong (about $59,500).

Heatwave intensifies across northern and southern china

While heavy rain affects some regions, high temperatures are building in other parts of the country.

Parts of Shaanxi, southern Hebei and Henan are expected to endure prolonged heat. Starting Wednesday, major cities including Xi'an and Shijiazhuang are expected to see frequent hot days over the coming week, with temperatures reaching up to 39 degrees Celsius.

In the Sichuan Basin, the combined influence of a continental high-pressure system and southwest airflow will bring hot and humid weather. Chongqing will experience not only high daytime temperatures but also overnight lows nearing 30 degree Celsius. Impacted by the subtropical high-pressure system, Fujian and Zhejiang will also see high temperatures.
