A Chinese defense spokesperson said on Tuesday that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy successfully conducted a test of a submarine-launched strategic missile, achieving its intended objectives.
Chen Xi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, made the remarks in response to a media query, noting that the test launch was a routine part of the military's annual training and consistent with international law and practices.
The spokesperson clarified that China had notified relevant countries in advance, demonstrating the openness and transparency of the Chinese military.
Chen reaffirmed China's commitment to the path of peaceful development and adherence to a defensive national defense policy as well as a nuclear strategy of self-defense.
He emphasized that China has always kept its nuclear capabilities at the minimum level required for national security and does not engage in a nuclear arms race with any country.
The modernization of China's nuclear forces is aimed at safeguarding national strategic security and maintaining global strategic stability, Chen added.
