Zhihua Temple mural showcases the artistry of ancient China

A remarkable Ming Dynasty mural is one of the highlights of the Zhihua Temple in Beijing.

Titled Ksitigarbha Expounding the Dharma, the mural depicts Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva seated atop a mythical creature, flanked by two attendants and the Ten Kings of the Underworld. Decorative cloud motifs adorn the upper portion of the composition.

Painted on a wooden panel wall, the mural measures around 4.7 meters wide by 3 meters high. Distinguished by its balanced composition, refined brushwork, accomplished technique and sophisticated use of color, it is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Ming Dynasty wall painting.
