'Painting' with sound: How voice artists create worlds through dubbing

A voice can convey more than just words. It can create images, express emotion and bring stories to life.

To Wang Su, a dubbing director and professor at the Shanghai Theater Academy, the voice is like a paintbrush. Through changes in volume, pitch, pace, intensity, stress and pauses, it gives words different colors and contours, allowing them to come alive beyond the page.

As AI continues to transform the dubbing industry, she believes that while it can handle narration and simple voice work, it still cannot mimic a performer's heartbeat or emotional connection to a character. Those human qualities remain at the heart of voice performance.
