Many Iraqi residents gathered at the event sites, chanting slogans against the US-led foreign military presence.

People carrying large portraits of the late leader gathered along the funeral procession route and chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" as Khamenei's coffin was driven on a large truck through the streets.

Early on July 9, the US launched new airstrikes against Iran, and Tehran responded by hitting Bahrain, Kuwait in crossfire that again threatened the deal intended to help end the war.
