A fire broke out at a footwear factory in east China's Fujian Province, with several people reported trapped or missing, local authorities said Thursday.

The blaze started at the factory in the village of Jiangtou in Jinjiang City at 12:04 p.m., according to the fire and rescue department of Quanzhou.

Efforts to contain the fire were still underway, with multiple fire trucks and ambulances on standby at the scene. 

Video footage shows a number of people trapped on the rooftop of a building engulfed in flames and smoke, while fire trucks spray water to control the blaze.

Rescuers could not yet enter the affected area for further search operations due to hazardous conditions, Xinhua reporters were told.
