Through the tiny openings of Jingdezhen's linglong porcelain
Jingdezhen, often called China's "porcelain capital," is home to many traditional ceramic techniques. Among them is linglong porcelain, one of the city's four famous traditional porcelain styles.
What makes linglong porcelain special is its delicate openwork pattern. Craftsmen carve tiny holes into the porcelain body, then fill them with a transparent glaze before firing. The finished piece looks almost see-through, but it can still hold water.
The making process is far from simple. It involves more than ten steps, from shaping and trimming the clay to painting, carving and glazing. A small mistake at any stage can affect the final piece.
Today, local ceramic makers are finding new ways to keep the tradition alive. By adjusting glaze formulas, using modern equipment and creating products with a more contemporary style, they are bringing this historic craft closer to modern tastes and everyday life.
