A Chinese folk music concert was recently held at the Algonquin Commons Theatre in Ottawa, Canada. Presented by the Wuxi Chinese Orchestra as part of the Music and Beyond Festival, the performance used music as a bridge and melodies as a medium to create a cultural dialogue between Chinese and Canadian civilizations.
The concert opened with the lively Dance of the Golden Snake, followed by classic pieces including Ambush from Ten Sides, A Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix, and Dunhuang, showcasing the rich heritage of traditional Chinese culture in an immersive Eastern musical experience.
Focusing on the themes of "dialogue" and "integration," the concert featured innovative artistic collaborations that blended Chinese and Western musical elements. The highlight of the concert was a rendition of "Moon Reflected on Second Spring," featuring the erhu alongside a Western string quartet. The concert concluded with a performance of the beloved Canadian folk song "Red River Valley" on traditional Chinese instruments, bringing the audience to the evening's emotional climax.
The Chinese Ambassador to Canada Wang Di attended the event along with former Canadian Senator Hu Zixiu and around 700 guests and local residents to enjoy the performance by the Wuxi Chinese Orchestra.
The concert created a warm atmosphere and drew enthusiastic responses, with prolonged applause throughout the evening. Many attendees said the performance deepened their understanding of Chinese culture through the music and highlighted the resonance of cross-cultural exchange.
